Spill Ware cups are hand painted wheel thrown porcelain. The images are based on the traditional C19th Staffordshire Spill vases. The vases were modelled figurative ceramics kept on the mantelpiece to hold ‘spills’ - thin wax, rolled paper or wooden tapers used to transfer fire from the fireplace to candles, lamps, cigars and pipes. Playing with the word 'spill’ here is perhaps suggestive of spilling your tea.
