The Smoking Girl and Other Tales at Pablo Fanque 14th April 2009
Smoking Girl and other Tales is the first jewellery exhibition by Sydney artist Sassy Park.
This exhibition is a departure from Park’s earlier colourful pieces depicting everyday images and characters from her surroundings. Inspired by fables and morality tales, illustrations from childhood stories and love songs these new pieces evoke a playful nostalgia for a romantic past. Charms of love and loss, forgotten relatives and favourite pets decorate Park’s fine porcelain pendants. These diminutive objects of familiar faces and neighbourhood animals are delicately painted in silhouette. Each unique piece resonates with its own story and humorous suggestion. Maiden aunts of dubious morals and young girls with unbecoming behaviour allude to secrets and scandalous gossip from family histories. Sassy Park has a Bachelor of Arts and Post-graduate Diploma from the Sydney College of the Arts and was awarded the Desiderius Orban Travelling Scholarship for painting. Park has exhibited in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane, and only recently turned her hand to painting on porcelain.
